Sport Clubs A to Z

See all the sports on offer at UoM Sport.

We have over 80 different sports at the University of Manchester with opportunities for beginners up to elite athletes.

Sports clubs at University run differently than school sport, they are mostly student led and self-sustaining. Each club is different, they have different training times, locations and competition structures.

Our Sport Clubs provide training and support for our student athletes and also actively engage with staff, alumni and the community in the delivery of their sessions. The majority of our clubs compete in BUCSThe Christie Championships, Varsity and several other local and national competitions.

Take a look at the sport that interests you to see what is on offer and how you can get involved!

How can I Join a club?
  • Find the club’s page on the “Sport Club A to Z“.
  • Contact the club either by email or through their social media expressing interest, it’s a good idea to give them a brief background of your experience in the sport.
  • Competitive sports host trials in September/October due to the high demand for places. However most clubs are open to all and host a “Welcome Session” in September where you can try the sport out before committing.
Committee & Coaches
    • All clubs are run by students for students, each year club’s hold and Annual General Meeting (AGM) where students elect their peers into leadership positions such as “Club Captain” & “Treasurer”.
    • Committee members are offered support and training by UoM Sport to enable them to fulfil their role and develop future employability skills.
    • Every student who joins a club must follow abide to the UoM Sport “Code of Conduct”.
    • Committee Members log their volunteer hours through our “Sports Volunteer Scheme” which contribute to the “Stellify Award“.
    • Clubs have highly experienced qualified coaches who attend training, match days and competitions.

– Discounted training facility hire.

– Highly experienced and qualified coaches.

– Equipment.

– Playing kit.

– Annual gym membership to the Armitage Centre.

– Custom strength and conditioning programmes.

Training & Competition

Training:

Clubs train throughout the week at different times at different locations in order to improve their athletic performance and prepare for upcoming fixtures – training will always fall outside of University teaching time. Team Manchester athletes have an expectation that they are committed to attending training on a regular basis.

Competition:

For clubs that compete in BUCS Competitions their fixtures are either on Wednesday afternoons (free from lectures) or weekends. Depending what level each club plays at means travel for competition can range from 3 to 300 miles. For sports where we do not have facilities on site we have a number of partnerships with the best sports facilities in Manchester.

Socials and Awards

Sport clubs are one of the best places to make friends and meet people at university. Sports clubs have a very active social side organising a range of events for members to attend, from club nights to sustainability workshops. All clubs offer socials both with and without alcohol which tend to happen on a weekly basis but can be less frequent depending on the club.

There are three awards events across the year.

  • The XXI Club Dinner is in November. Here new electees are announced and welcomed to the club.
  • The University of Manchester Sport Awards and XXI Dinner take place in early May. Throughout Semester 2 clubs are nominated in different award categories for all their amazing work throughout the year. At the dinner, awards are announced to the students and performance colours given out.
  • The UoM Sport Summer Social takes place in May, this is a less formal dinner where the awards are announced to wider club members and sports enthusiasts.
