Sport Exec committee 22/23: applications re-opened!

Congratulations to our confirmed Sport Exec Committee members for 2022:

We are looking for 3 more committed students to sit on the Sport Executive Committee for 22-23!

⭐ Be the student voice in sporting decisions at the University of Manchester

⭐ Aid the SSO and the SPORT Office with decisions about club funding, new groups, campaigns, and much more

⭐ Lead in areas of your specific role

The vacant roles are:

  • BUCS/Competitions Officer
  • Events/Varsity Officer
  • Health and Wellbeing Officer

Please find below information on the general responsibilities, the rewards, application and election procedures, and individual job descriptions. 

General responsibilities 

Executive committee members will support the SSO and SPORT Office in providing the following services: 

  • Holding a position of responsibility by being part of a democratically elected committee in the Athletic Union at the University of Manchester  
  • Commitment to volunteer time and assistance at events including the September committee training weekend, Freshers’ Week, the Christie Championship and the AU Charity Ball and Awards Dinner (approx 5 hours monthly). Officers may be required to help out at open days or promotional events to support the SPORT marketing officer. 
  • Working with the SSO by providing the student voice in relation to sporting decisions at the University of Manchester including disciplinaries, or funding applications.

  • Registered student at UoM – you do not need to hold a club committee position to apply for the exec!

Students successfully elected to the AU executive committee will receive:

 Election procedure

Successful applications will be shortlisted, and you will then be invited to give a short 2 minute speech on why you should be elected, after which each AU club will have a vote. 

The following are the available Exec Officer positions for 2022/2023 

Events/Varsity Officer

Main duties and responsibilities 

  • Organisation of key social events including Awards Dinner, committee functions and alternate awards, this will include:  
  • Finding sponsorship 
  • Managing the events 
  • Organising the sale of tickets 
  • Communicating with students about socials  
  • Promoting the events 
  • Plan themed socials 
  • Assist with management, promotion, organisation, sponsorship of weekly social and ticket sales: 
  • Attending the majority of Wednesday night socials throughout the year 
  • Liaising regularly with the SU events team 
  • Responsible for working with the AU and venues to make AU socials inclusive, safe and follow guidelines.  
  • Assist with planning of Varsity event offer alongside SSO and BUCS/Competition Officer. 
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the awards committee 

Key skills and requirements: 

  • Planning and organising skills 
  • Evidence of ability to work in a team and independently 
  • Able to work flexibly, particularly relevant in the run-up to Awards Dinner (May) 
BUCS/Competitions Officer

Main duties and responsibilities 

  • Assist SSO with BUCS-related admin:  
  • Collation and inputting of scores on BUCS Play every Thursday during BUCS season 
  • Chasing up clubs who have not entered their score on BUCS Play by Thursday every week. 
  • Collating all results that clubs send you from their events throughout the year, writing up the main successes to be distributed on our channels. 
  • Assist SSO with other competition entries and support with identification and admin associated with alternative competition to BUCS. 
  • Assist with planning of Varsity competition offer. 
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the awards committee 

 

Key skills and requirements: 

  • Good interpersonal skills – both verbal and written 
  • Willingness to spend 1-2 hour Wednesday evening/Thursday mornings on fixture inputting every week 
  • Good organisation and time management skills 

 

Desirable: 

  • Good working knowledge of Excel. 
Wellbeing Officer

Main duties and responsibilities 

  • Chair of Welfare Committee made up of club liaison officers 
  • Help with identification of individual club welfare needs – create bespoke pledges 
  • Help with club action plans 
  • Oversee all of the mental health and wellbeing agenda within the AU 
  • Work on the AU Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey 
  • Link between AU, wider services at the university and SU for mental health and wellbeing. 
  • Develop and manage mental health and wellbeing forum for AU clubs and members. 
  • Promote wellbeing messages and campaigns to the clubs. 
  • Work with and support club Wellbeing Officers to promote and safeguard club members. 
  • Assist SSO with planning training and organising workshops/events. 
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the Awards Committee. 

Key skills and requirements: 

 

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills 
  • Good interpersonal skills – both verbal and written 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Be committed to advancing the mental health and wellbeing provisions of the AU and UoM Sport department 
Social Media Officer - unavailable

Main duties and responsibilities 

  • Responsible for the publicity of all clubs and their achievements, through liaising with the Mancunion and other forms of public media 
  • Creating social media content for our channels, including lives/Q&As and promoting club successes.  
  • Linking the Clubs and Athletic Union to ensure that relevant news and event information is distributed to the appropriate bodies 
  • Responsible for creating the “Curiously Purple Sporting Network” newsletter with help from the SSO and the BUCS representative 
  • Assisting XXI Club committee in managing XXI Club Dinner, working on the XXI Club website and thinking of ways to engage the XXI club with the students.  
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the Awards Committee. 

 

Key skills and requirements:   

  • Excellent communication and organisation skills 
  • Have some knowledge of social media platforms 
Inclusion and Diversity Officer - unavailable

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Work with the SSO, sport department and the SU on projects and initiatives to help promote diversity and inclusion in sport. 
  • Work with clubs who want assistance on how to ensure their club is more diverse and inclusive. 
  • Get feedback from members of the AU and other students through surveys or other initiatives on how the AU could be more inclusive. 
  • Alongside the SSO, be the key liaison between the inclusion and diversity department and other key contacts in the University to involve sport in wider university inclusion projects. 
  • Help engage clubs on projects such as LGBTQ+ month, International Women’s Day, This Girl Can, or any others that you may want to run. 
  • Chair a small committee made up of  
  • Women’s Officer 
  • International Officer 
  • Any other inclusion roles that you may want to represent. 
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the Awards Committee.

  • Ability to work independently 
  • Be committed to advancing the inclusion and diversity of AU clubs and UoM Sport department 
  • This is the first time we will have this position so we need someone really passionate to bring life to this role, bringing their own ideas and enthusiasm.  
Sustainability Officer - unavailable

Main duties and responsibilities: 

  • Be the key contact between the AU and the Sustainability department to engage the sport department and the clubs in wider University sustainability initiatives. 
  • Run projects on sustainability to get the clubs involved such as social media campaigns, focus groups or specific events and workshops.  
  • Write key sustainability targets for the AU and help with reaching these targets 
  • Be the key person helping the SSO with the Sustainability Competition, promoting it to clubs and helping write the application forms and communications.  
  • Be on the panel to choose the winner of the Sustainability Competition.  
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the Awards Committee. 

Key skills and requirements

 

  • Passion for sustainability, and knowledge on key environmental issues. 
  • Enthusiastic and hard working. 
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills 
  • Committed to working towards improving sustainability in the AU.

 

Fundraising Officer - unavailable

Main duties and responsibilities: 

  • Assist with engaging the sport department and clubs in University fundraising initiatives by working closely with the RAG societies and halls liaison officer.
  • Run projects on fundraising such as social media campaigns, focus groups or specific events and workshops.  
  • Help sports clubs with reaching fundraising targets and be their main point of contact for promotion  
  • Be the key person helping the SSO with any fundraising projects, promoting it to clubs and helping the organisation of these projects.  
  • Involvement in the annual awards procedure, including a seat on the Awards Committee.
