Karate

Everything you need to know about karate at the University of Manchester.

About

We currently offer karate through our sport club programme. Our University of Manchester Karate Club works hard to provide opportunities for players both new to the sport and within our BUCS programme to support those who want to perform in high level university competition. Whilst we don’t currently offer karate through our Sporticipate or our Sport League programmes, we are constantly reviewing how we can get more students involved in sport.

All the information you need to know about karate should be here but if you do have any further questions, we would love to hear from you.

Karate Club

We practice shotokan karate and are associated with the Karate Union of Great Britain. With a high level of instruction from the country’s best teachers, we take on members from absolute beginners to experienced black belts, so everybody is welcome! Using a wide curriculum, we teach both kata and kumite to a high standard and attend several competitions throughout the year, to which all members are encouraged to take part in. Training is on Tuesdays and Fridays, with a double session on Friday, where the second session is sparring practice. Beginners should initially attend the first session on Friday, however many members stay for both sessions!
If you’re interested in joining, come along anytime as your first session is free! You only need sport appropriate clothing. Once you sign up, a KUGB license is required, and kit is supplied by the club at a discounted rate. Our committee is here to help, don’t hesitate to get in contact with any questions via email or social media!

Club Philosophy

We aim to promote and grow the sport of karate, and provide an inclusive environment to practice. All are welcome no matter your size, background, or athletic ability. Everyone is encouraged to compete and be an active member of the team.

Teams

Though karate competitions are mostly individual events, we pride ourselves in competing as a team and supporting each other from the sidelines. Our biggest competition of the year, BUCS, is a great weekend away and usually sees over fifteen members participating, competing with other universities from across the country.
